    2 Corinthians

    ,
Corinth was a very important commercial center which made it easy for it to be a place for all sorts of vice and evil. Also, its closeness to Athens added the problem of intellectualism. Greece was known for its philosophers and philosophy. St. Paul established the church of Corinth during his second missionary trip. Unfortunately, the immoral environment found in the city adversely affected the church. Reports of the problems within the church reached St. Paul's ears, and so he wrote an earlier letter (1 Corinthians) to answer these reports, correcting sinful practices and refuting false doctrine. In this second letter, written only a few months after the first, St. Paul, as a caring father, wanted to make sure that his rebukes in the earlier letter were received positively, and that it actually encouraged them to repent. He also focuses his letter on defending his apostleship, rebuking ungodly behavior that still persisted in Corinth, and to encourage them to collect money for the needy in Jerusalem. This letter is one that is quite beneficial to those serving others for God, as it explains how service should be, as we learn from the example of St. Paul.  This Orthodox Christian commentary is derived from a series of sermons given by His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States, where His Eminence has been serving since the early 90s.

    Acts

    ,
As the only record of the first thirty years of the early Church, the book known as The Acts of the Apostles, follows the ministry of the apostles, with a particular focus on St. Peter in the first half, and St. Paul in the second half. The author of the book is St. Luke the Evangelist, "the beloved physician" as St. Paul described him (Colossians 4:14), who was a companion of the apostles during several missionary trips; it was the second historical account written by St. Luke to a man named Theophilus (assumed to be a Roman officer), with the first account being the Gospel of St. Luke (after which Theophilus is presumed to have converted to Christianity).  This book, inspired by God, records for us the establishment and early growth of the Church, and relates several conversions (Ethiopian eunuch, St. Paul, and Cornelius). Without this work, we would be without an answer to "what happened next" after the gospel accounts, we would not have the context to help us understand many of the writings of St. Paul, and we would not have the benefit of seeing the Holy Spirit's work in the ministry of the apostles, as they fulfilled God's directive and theme of this book: "You shall be witnesses to Me" (Acts 1:8).

Adapting to a New Place Called Home

    ,
New to America? Want to serve newcomers? Curious about the history of Coptic immigration to the U.S.A.? Trying to adapt yourself to your new environment? Coptic Orthodox Christians have been immigrating to the United States in droves over the last few decades, and their ability to adapt to their new environment has varied greatly. Bishop Youssef has incorporated years of experience observing and guiding Coptic immigrants into a book that details the history of Copts in the U.S.A., and also provides a comprehensive outlook at how Copts can adequately adapt to their new home. His Grace also shares his vision of the future of Coptic Orthodox Christianity in the land of immigration and how people can fruitfully serve those around them.

Christ is Risen from the Dead

    , ,
What is the place of the resurrection in our lives? Is it a mere intellectual piece of information? Is it a change of diet, from a plant-based to an animal-based diet? The resurrection is the center of the Apostles' preaching. As St. Paul the Apostle said, "And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty." If Christ's life had ended by His death and burial, then He would not have been God, but rather someone who had lived among us for a while, who had nice teachings, who died and the story ended. Then we would not have been saved, but would have still been in our sins. Therefore, we need a clear understanding of the depth and impact of the resurrection on our lives, even in our day-to-day actions and interactions, to live the life of the resurrection to its fullest. H.E. Metropolitan Youssef was ordained Bishop in 1992 and elevated to Metropolitan in 2022 for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. His Eminence has completed a Ph.D. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX.

    Deep Psychological Needs

    , ,
This book offers a study of the six deep psychological needs which exist in every person. They need to be satisfied in a sound manner for the person to maintain healthy relationships within a family and with others. Problems and disagreements erupt when they are not properly satisfied. The human being's strong relationship with God, the study of the Holy Scriptures, and the practice of Church Mysteries, are a source of true satisfaction to every need God created within the human being. Therefore, the human being will not acquire inner peace, true joy and perfect love, except in the presence of the Lord Christ.

    Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians

[GALATIANS] St. Paul wrote this letter to the churches of Galatia, to respond to Judaizers who claimed that salvation was through the law. He proves that salvation is through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.  St. Paul also defended his apostleship, in response to attacks by Judaizers undermining him as not being an eyewitness of the Lord Jesus Christ. [EPHESIANS] St. Paul writes to the faithful in Ephesus (in modern-day Turkey), to describe the blessing of being members in the Church, which is the body of Christ, and also discusses the importance of behaving in a manner worthy of the calling to be members in Christ’s body.  [PHILIPPIANS] St. Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned in Rome under house arrest, expressing gratitude to the Philippians for their generous financial support, and comforting them because of their concern about him while he was in prison. In this letter, he conveys a tone of joy throughout, despite the circumstances he was facing.

Living in a time when homosexuality and transgenderism are not only widely accepted but also celebrated and promoted, we are continually bombarded with misinformation. Are they considered an alternative lifestyle? Are they an illness and a sin? After laying the foundation of the Orthodox Christian principles of sexuality, Metropolitan Youssef sets out to treat this complex topic with sensitivity from Christian, social, and scientific perspectives. His Eminence outlines the stages of change toward full recovery from homosexuality and transgenderism, emphasizing that transforming the heart comes before changing the external behavior. He encourages all to love everyone but hate the sin. This book offers an alternative path where people can live a more abundant life, full of joy and peace, which can only be achieved through developing a genuine relationship with God.

God Was Incarnate and Became Man

    ,
On the Feast of Nativity, the Church celebrates the birth of Christ, a mystery that surpasses the human mind: God was incarnate and became Man. Of this incredible event, the prophets foretold hundreds of years before it happened: the details of the where, how, and why. The Lord is in our midst. He is with us-Immanuel, God with us. In this book, His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef explains the reasons for the incarnation and the significance of being born in Bethlehem, and discusses some of the prophecies and liturgical symbols of the incarnation. When we learn about this wondrous mystery, feelings of love, peace, joy, and gratitude overwhelm our hearts, and we cannot help but sing with the angels, saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"

The Divine Liturgy of the Eucharist is the greatest activity humankind participates in, because in the Liturgy we have Jesus Christ, Emmanuel our God, physically with us on the Altar, and He gives us His body and His blood, to feed on Him and to live forever. In the Divine Liturgy, true fellowship is actualized, with the Holy Trinity and with one another. Many of us may have attended the Divine Liturgy countless times, but we may not know how to fully benefit from it. We come to the spring of living water, yet leave thirsty. How to Build Boundaries

    , ,
Boundaries are like a fence with gates, which are opened to what is good, yet are closed to whatever is bad. If I, however, closed shut my heart completely, and did not let it ever be opened, this fence is consequently transformed into a wall that completely isolates and imprisons me. Building boundaries is not against love and individuality, but makes clear our responsibilities and our role. His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef, having many years of experience, reveals what healthy boundaries are, how to build them, and what are some obstacles to setting them. H.E. Metropolitan Youssef was ordained Bishop in 1992 and elevated to Metropolitan in 2022 for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. How to Endure Injustice

    ,
"For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps" (1 Peter 2:21). We are all called to endure injustice, and we need to endure because we live in a world corrupted by sin. In this world, we will suffer from sickness, injustice, unfairness, financial challenges, the death and loss of loved ones, persecution as Christians, and oppression. We will all be exposed to various forms of suffering. If we do not learn how to endure, we will become bitter and angry. Without the virtue of endurance, we will have no peace and joy in our lives. Using Biblical and life examples, His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef explains the virtue of endurance and presents clear, practical steps to acquire this essential virtue.

    How to Overcome Addiction

    , ,
When we speak about addiction, the first thing that comes to mind is drug and alcohol addiction because this problem represents a danger threatening individuals, families, and society at large. Addiction, however, is not in reality limited to only drugs and alcohol, but its concept extends to encompass every habit that holds a person captive. Despite the damage resulting from the dominion of these habits over a person-whether from the health, mental, or material aspect, or their effect on the social condition-nevertheless, the person continues to practice them because he is robbed of his will and freedom. In a new volume of his "How to" series, His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef addresses the subject of addiction, explaining its elements, causes, symptoms, and treatment, in his customary succinct style. H.E. Metropolitan Youssef was ordained Bishop in 1992 and elevated to Metropolitan in 2022 for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. Loneliness is a sweeping feeling of isolation, despite the person's being in the midst of a crowd. The feeling of loneliness does not require that a person be far from people, for a person might be living with others, and he nevertheless feels lonely. How to Serve

    ,
What is service in Christianity, and how does one serve as a Christian? In How to Serve, His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef answers these questions and many others on a subject he knows intimately, speaking not from book knowledge but from his vast decades-long experience in service, spanning from when he was a young man serving in the Sunday school movement in Egypt to his ordination as a bishop for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States in 1992, continuing to the present. In this book, His Eminence also explores the principles of effective service, how to avoid burnout, how to handle conflict in service, and the challenges we face in the 21st century. Christ is the pattern of service, and our goal is to imitate Christ, who said, "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve," and "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet."

The cross is the center of Christianity, answering the all-important question of how God saved humanity. Although the cross was a curse and a symbol of shame and defeat, Christianity has transformed it into a blessing and a symbol of honor and victory. With it, we adorn ourselves, our homes, and our belongings. And we make the sign of the cross innumerable times daily; however, we have grown so accustomed to seeing the cross that we may have lost sight of its profound meaning and great power, and may have begun to wear a cross and make the sign of the cross out of force of habit. In this book, His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef uncovers this lost treasure, concisely explaining the various aspects of the cross, which not only affect our faith and salvation but also our day-to-day practical life.
