This Orthodox Christian commentary is derived from a series of sermons given by His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States, where His Eminence has been serving since the early 90s.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
St. Paul, contrary to popular opinion, preached in Rome. In line with his stance not to “build on another man’s foundation,” the fact that St. Paul was determined to go to Rome and preach the gospel there meant no other person (namely, St. Peter) had yet to “lay a foundation” (preach) there (Rom. 15:20).
In this epistle to the Romans, St. Paul addresses the issue of Judaizers, and the correlated doctrine of true justification by Christ. Some Christians with Jewish backgrounds were persuading new converts that unless they practiced the Law of Moses, and unless they were circumcised as required by that law, they would not be saved. Such “Judaizing teachers” or “Judaizers” had already disrupted churches in Antioch, Corinth, and Galatia, and the fear was that this would likely spread to Rome. To prevent this, and to assure that his visit to Rome would be a pleasant one, St. Paul wrote to them to explain the truth about the nature of the gospel of God, teaching them about the doctrines of Justification and Sanctification.others for God, as it explains how service should be, as we learn from the example of St. Paul.
This second book in Counseling Series II: Marriage addresses understanding oneself in marriage (commitment in marriage, essential needs and understanding how to satisfy them, forgiveness, competitive and controlling relationships, boundaries, roles of men and women in the Christian family, and many other such topics). The last section contains His Grace's answers to questions asked at the end of several homilies and lectures.
This counseling series is composed of several homilies and lectures by His Grace Bishop Youssef, the Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States, over a period of twenty-eight years (1989-2017). Counseling Series I focused on Raising Children. This Counseling Series II focuses on the topic of Marriage.
New to America? Want to serve newcomers? Curious about the history of Coptic immigration to the U.S.A.? Trying to adapt yourself to your new environment?
Coptic Orthodox Christians have been immigrating to the United States in droves over the last few decades, and their ability to adapt to their new environment has varied greatly.
Bishop Youssef has incorporated years of experience observing and guiding Coptic immigrants into a book that details the history of Copts in the U.S.A., and also provides a comprehensive outlook at how Copts can adequately adapt to their new home. His Grace also shares his vision of the future of Coptic Orthodox Christianity in the land of immigration and how people can fruitfully serve those around them.
[GALATIANS] St. Paul wrote this letter to the churches of Galatia, to respond to Judaizers who claimed that salvation was through the law. He proves that salvation is through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. St. Paul also defended his apostleship, in response to attacks by Judaizers undermining him as not being an eyewitness of the Lord Jesus Christ. [EPHESIANS] St. Paul writes to the faithful in Ephesus (in modern-day Turkey), to describe the blessing of being members in the Church, which is the body of Christ, and also discusses the importance of behaving in a manner worthy of the calling to be members in Christ’s body. [PHILIPPIANS] St. Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned in Rome under house arrest, expressing gratitude to the Philippians for their generous financial support, and comforting them because of their concern about him while he was in prison. In this letter, he conveys a tone of joy throughout, despite the circumstances he was facing.
Boundaries are like a fence with gates, which are opened to what is good, yet are closed to whatever is bad. If I, however, closed shut my heart completely, and did not let it ever be opened, this fence is consequently transformed into a wall that completely isolates and imprisons me. Building boundaries is not against love and individuality, but makes clear our responsibilities and our role.
His Eminence Metropolitan Youssef, having many years of experience, reveals what healthy boundaries are, how to build them, and what are some obstacles to setting them.
H.E. Metropolitan Youssef was ordained Bishop in 1992 and elevated to Metropolitan in 2022 for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. His Eminence has completed a Ph.D. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary University in San Antonio, TX.
